A Note for 2011
by FX Harsono

The year 2011 almost comes to a close. This year, my participation in the Indonesian art world is virtually non-existent. Since 2010, I have been focusing my activities outside Indonesia, especially in Europe. The efforts bore fruit. At the end of 2010, I received the offer to collaborate with ARNDT Gallery in Berlin and with Tyler Rollins in New York. There were also the invitations to work with several independent institutions, such as the invitations for a group exhibition at 4A in Sydney, to take part in the 4th Moscow Biennale, and at MACRO or the Museo D’Arte Contemporanea Roma, and several others.

My 2011 activities began with the group exhibition at 4A, Sydney, titled “Edge of Elsewhere”. Then there was the exhibition of “Closing the Gap”, held by Melbourne Institute of Fine Art (MIFA), in Melbourne, Australia. Afterwards were exhibitions of “Negotiating Home, History, and Nation: Two Decades of Contemporary Art in Southeast Asia, 1991–2011” by Singapore Art Museum, Singapore; “Beyond the Self”, by National Portrait Gallery, Canberra, Australia; “Asia: Looking South” at the ARNDT Gallery, Berlin, Germany; “Now Ink: A Call for New Perceptions”, a special project at the 5th SH Contemporary, Shanghai Exhibition Center, Shanghai. I also took part in the 4th Moscow Biennale in Moscow, Russia, curated by Peter Weibel; and gave a workshop at 4A with the theme of “Memory of a Name”, which was held since last July and continued this October, to finish off with an exhibition in January 2012. I will close the year 2011 with an exhibition “Beyond the East” at MACRO, Rome, Italy, curated by Dominique Lora.

In these events, I have not always displayed new works. In 2011, apart from the two dimensional works, I also made video performance works, which have been well received by several institutions, especially Arthub. There are two dimensional works that form the series The Erased Name and Writing in the Rain. I am now starting with the series The Outsider. I also renew the installation work Bong Belung, which I will exhibit at MACRO at the closing of this year.

Another activity that has taken a lot of my time and energy is my research about the Chinese names that have been erased and the collective memories that arose due to the changing of the names from the Chinese names to Indonesian names. I began the research in the beginning of 2011. The research, which has as its basis the history of Indonesia, grew to include also the issue about the role that the Chinese have played in the formation of the Indonesian nation and about the writing of the Indonesian national history, in which the role of the Chinese has always been ignored or even erased. The results of the research will be used as the materials to create my works. To this date, the research is still on-going and developing.

What about the 2012 program? I only plan to have two solo exhibitions: at Tyler Rollins in New York in March, and at ARNDT in Berlin in July. For the rest of the year, I will concentrate on my research and on creating works for my solo exhibition in 2013, which I cannot yet write about in details. I will focus my activities at independent institutions.

See you in my activities in 2012.
